Allelopathic potential of Bothriochloa laguroides var. laguroides (DC.) Herter (Poaceae: Andropogoneae)

چکیده
Bothriochloa laguroides var. laguroides (DC.) Herter, a native bluestem of America, has been shown to produce many biologically active compounds. The allelopathic potential of aqueous extracts from roots, stems and leaves was examined. Lettuce seeds (Lactuca sativa) and maize (Zea mays), the common allelopathy bioassay systems, as well as seeds from two native species, wintergreen paspalum (Paspalum guenoarum) and lovegrass (Eragrostis curvula), were germinated in the presence of aqueous extracts. Percent seed germination, root and shoot elongation were measured. After 4 and 7 days root, stem and leaf extracts caused inhibition of root and shoot elongation in all four species tested. Aqueous extracts were generally less inhibitory to seed germination. Aqueous extracts from different parts of B. laguroides var. laguroides show therefore allelopathic effects inhibiting, in particular, growth of competing plants. & 2009 Elsevier GmbH. Chromosome number in South American species of Bothriochloa (Poaceae: Andropogoneae) and evolutionary history of the genus.
Mitotic chromosome number of 14 taxa of Bothriochloa native to Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay were surveyed. Chromosome numbers of B. eurylemma, B. meridionalis and B. velutina are reported for the first time, with 2n = 6x = 60, and this ploidy level is the most common among the studied taxa. In addition, new cytotypes were found for B. alta (2n = 60), B. barbinodis (2n = 60), B. exaristata (2n ...
متن کاملComparative Seed Heat Tolerances Among Native and Non-indigenous Invasive Grassland Species
Prescribed burning is a popular method for the control of invasive species; however, research is lacking on the application of fire in a species-specific manner. We assess whether heat sensitivity differences among seeds of Texas grassland species can be used to target invasive species in prescribed burns. We conducted heat treatments on the invasive yellow bluestem (Bothriochloa ischaemum), an...
متن کاملMolecular evolution of FLORICAULA/LEAFY orthologs in the Andropogoneae (Poaceae).
Members of the grass family (Poaceae) exhibit a broad range of inflorescence structures and other morphologies, making the grasses an interesting model system for studying the evolution of development. Here we present an analysis of the molecular evolution of FLORICAULA/LEAFY-like genes, which are important developmental regulatory loci known to affect inflorescence development in a wide range ...

Allelopathic effects of aqueous extract of rhizomes of Cynodon dactylon L. were studied on seed germination and seedling growth of three legume crops (Phaseolus vulgaris L., Pisum sativum L., and Vicia faba L.), three Labiatae species (Thymus vulgaris L., Melissa officinalis L., and Mentha spicata L.), and two species of Poaceae (Avena fatua L., Sorghum halepense L.). Seed germination of all L...
متن کاملNADP-malate dehydrogenase gene evolution in Andropogoneae (Poaceae): gene duplication followed by sub-functionalization.
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Plastid NADP-dependent malate dehydrogenase (MDH) catalyses the conversion of oxaloacetate to malate. In C4 plants, it is involved in photosynthetic carbon assimilation. In Poaceae, one NADP-MDH gene has been identified in rice (C3; Erhartoideae) and maize (C4; Panicoideae), whereas two tandemly repeated genes have been identified in Sorghum (C4; Panicoideae). In the present...
